WHY DO GUMS BLEED?

News

11 Jul 2018

Bleeding gums are the first sign of gingivitis, a disease that is important to prevent and combat so as to stop it from evolving into periodontitis and to maintain good oral health.

Gingivitis is a disease characterised by an inflammatory reaction of the gums, but without destruction of the supporting tissues of the teeth.

The main cause is the build-up of dental biofilm as a consequence of poor oral hygiene, although other factors such as genetic predisposition or environmental factors (stress, diet, smoking, hormonal alterations, etc.) may also have an influence.

In addition to redness and swelling, one of the main clinical signs is bleeding gums. When gums bleed, the mouth is “talking” to indicate that things are not normal, so it is important to listen to the warning sign and take appropriate measures.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTION

Gingivitis is a very common disease among the general population (between 6 and 8 in every 10 develop it), but it is reversible if proper oral hygiene is kept with specific products. Additionally, prevention is important both to keep gingivitis from progressing into periodontitis and to maintain good general health.

The VITIS® gingival product range, which has proven effective for both the prevention and the treatment of gingivitis-related gingival inflammation and bleeding, has launched a campaign to raise awareness among patients and professionals of the need to act when bleeding occurs. Given this situation, it is necessary to go to the dentist to rule out complications and to get recommendations for the most appropriate treatment.

The VITIS® gingival range is made up of:

• Toothpaste and mouthwash with an antiseptic formula inhibiting the formation of dental biofilm and reducing inflammation of the gums.

• Toothbrushes with soft filaments and a straight filament profile for the daily oral hygiene of those with delicate gums or signs of inflammation.
